Messenger Blues is a collection of poetry and short stories written by New York City-based bike messenger Eugene Carrington. As someone who also gets around the city by bike, I can empathize with Carrington’s lighthearted yet melancholy reflections. In his writing, characters often deal with much more than just the physical strain of a heavy load to transport. Instead, their aches and pains are rooted in the anxious, competitive worry that many New Yorkers feel from the day-to-day onslaught of tight-knit living. I try to capture that burden in a simple, centered illustration, which breaks the title’s route in two.
